Akzo Nobel closes down chlorine production in Bohus, Sweden

15-Sep-2004
Akzo Nobel has decided to stop production of chlorine at the Bohus site in Sweden, as of the end of 2005. The closure will affect about 150 jobs on the site. Akzo Nobel will negotiate the reduction of the workforce with labor unions. The dominant user of chlorine from the plant in Bohus is building its own chlorine production plant. This customer terminated the Chlorine Supply Agreement with Akzo Nobel taking effect end 2005. Half of the chlorine-alkali production comprises lye and Akzo Nobel will remain a main supplier of lye to the Pulp Industry in the Nordic countries by providing deliveries from its other sites in Europe. The Bohus pulp and paper chemicals site is situated 16 km north of Göteborg, where it provides work for about 700 people. - The mercury based chlorine plant in Bohus with a capacity 100.000 tons per year is going to be closed in a safe and environmentally suitable manner. The treatment of mercury will be in line with the Swedish legislation, says Karl-Axel Bergh, site manager.
