Bayer included in ethics indices

19-Jul-2001

Bayer has been included in the new "FTSE4Good" index series, in which U.K.-based index calculation specialist FTSE lists companies that are judged to have performed particularly well in the areas of human rights, social standards and environmental sustainability.

"We are particularly pleased about being included in the FTSE4Good Global 100 Index," said Bayer Management Board Chairman Manfred Schneider. "This means we are one of the world's top 100 companies in the area of corporate social responsibility." This kind of evaluation is also significant for the enhancement of a company's corporate value over the medium term, considering the growing number of ethically oriented institutional and private investors. Only seven German companies have been accepted into this exclusive index. Bayer is the only non-U.S. or U.K.-based pharmaceutical company in the index, and also the only European chemicals company to be included.

Bayer is also a constituent of the so-called FTSE4Good Europe 50 Index, which includes the 50 best European companies according to FTSE's ethics criteria. This index has a total of nine German constituents.

FTSE is one of the world's leading index calculation specialists. The company is owned in equal parts by the London Stock Exchange and the Financial Times. Its selection process is based on information released by both the companies themselves and by independent institutions, with international non-government organizations (NGOs) also serving as a source for evaluation. The selection committee, which ultimately decides which companies are accepted into the indices, also includes representatives of other ethically oriented institutional investors.
