Boehringer Ingelheim and Syngenta back natural substance samples from CyBio

06-Dec-2000 - Germany
CyBio Screening GmbH, a joint venture of CyBio AG with Hans-Knöll-Institut, will be supplying natural substance samples to Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma KG over a three-year period, and to Syngenta Crop Protection AG in Basel until the end of 2001. The samples are to be used in the search for medical active ingredients and the development of new plant protection agents. The total volume of the supply contracts already concluded with Hans-Knöll-Institut für Naturstoffforschung e.V. and now being passed on to CyBio Screening GmbH comes to about two million marks. CyBio is thereby making its first appearance as a supplier of sample materials for active ingredient screening, a market from which the Jena biotechnology firm is expecting considerable sales and income potential. Especially because there is already a success clause covering both initial orders: If a new active ingredient is generated from the supplied samples and put on the market, additional licensing payments will give CyBio a share in the proceeds. For pharmacological research, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma KG will receive exclusively samples derived from microbial sources. For the development of new plant protection agents, CyBio will supply Syngenta Crop Protection AG with test materials that are likewise from microbial sources. The activities of CyBio Screening GmbH, which was founded this year, go way beyond the supply of natural substance samples: The company is the group's training and education centre for users of Jena's screening technology. CyBio systems will also be further developed in the affiliated application centre in accordance with specific user interests.
