Degussa increases involvement in upcoming printed electronics market

Degussa takes shareholding in printed systems

08-Feb-2006
Degussa AG, Dusseldorf, is taking a holding in printed systems GmbH, a high-tech company based in Chemnitz, thereby increasing its involvement in the upcoming market for printed electronics. The venture capital participation in printed systems gives Degussa access to applications and products for new material systems which it develops in its "Science to Business Center Nanotronics" in Marl. The first products that printed systems is offering are computer keyboards printed directly on paper and ID tags. These latter are simple electronic labels with a 96-bit storage capacity, and a forerunner of so-called RFID tags (Radio Frequency Identification). The company's printing technology has enabled it to integrate electronic functions into paper products, and at a much lower cost than the conventional electronic industry today can offer. Experts anticipate that over the next 10 years a market with sales of around 30 billion euros will develop for these new electronic applications and similar. Degussa's strategic shareholding will lead to a significant expansion in the production facilities of printed systems. Prof. Arved Hübler, one of the Directors of printed systems, announced that the expansion will enable the company to supply large volumes of simple mass-printed ID tags with a 96-bit storage capacity.
