Alcan Chemicals Europe and Süd-Chemie to cooperate in flame retardants for polymer industry

30-Oct-2001
Alcan Chemicals Europe and Süd-Chemie announce their intention to jointly develop and promote a new range of flame retardants. Alcan's Flamtard AN range will meet the growing and demanding safety requirements of the plastics industry. Süd-Chemie's Nanofil® products offer advanced flame retardant properties to meet the needs for plastics with a low degree of flammability. The advantages of this flame retardant technology are to delay ignition, reduce smoke emisions, eliminate slumping and dripping of the molten polymer by Formation of a strong stable char, i.e. cable and wire manufacturing will become more effective. These benefits are supported by improved processing characteristics such as a lower melt viscosity and higher temperature stability. This application is considered by Süd-Chemie and ALCAN as an important progress in the development of Nano-composite technology. Available from January 2002, the Flamtard AN product range combines the benefits and advantages of inorganic flame retardants and organic modified nanoclays (NANOFIL® of Süd-Chemie) offering the user a premium performance flame retardant. Starting January 2002, Süd-Chemie will also offer Nanofil® for direct use in cable and wire production or compounding. With some 60 production and sales companies throughout Europe, America, Africa and Asia, Süd-Chemie is active in the sectors of adsorbents, additives and catalysts. In individual niche markets, it ranks among the world's leading suppliers. In 2000, the Süd-Chemie Group achieved, with more than 5000 employees, sales of EUR 821 billion.
