Enhanced fire protection in electrical fittings and vehicles

New flame-retardant PC/ABS for extrusion applications

26-Mar-2002

Leverkusen – Bayer AG is tapping new applications in the extrusion segment with a new flame-retardant blend of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer (PC/ABS). The product, currently being introduced to the market under the name Bayblend® FR 3030, sets new standards of fire protection in the field of electrical and telecommunications equipment and in public transport. Its excellent processing behavior makes it possible to produce profiles of all kinds, e.g. cable conduits, guide channels for optical waveguides and contact rails. It is also ideal for the extrusion of thermoformable sheet and for the blow molding of hollow articles, as are used, for example, in the interiors of buses and rail vehicles.

Products made of the material (which is UL94 V-0 listed) comply with all the usual fire prevention standards in the electrical, construction and public transport industries. Because of its much lower emission of acid and toxic gases compared with conventional materials, Bayblend FR 3030 reduces potential subsequent fire damage through corrosion and contamination, and, as such, is a new milestone in the management of fire risks. The halogen-free material satisfies the German cable standard DIN VDE 0472, Parts 813 and 815, and complies with the requirements of the TCO 99 and "Blue Angel" environment symbols.

Apart from its excellent flame retardance, the other properties of Bayblend FR 3030 constitute a 'new state of the art'. Above all, its excellent UV stability, mechanical performance and exceptional heat resistance open up applications where even more demanding specifications have to be met.
