Lilly Promotes Lechleiter to Executive Vice President,Pharmaceutical Products and Corporate Development
"John Lechleiter has consistently demonstrated dynamic leadership and foresight in every position he has held during his 22 years at Lilly," said Sidney Taurel, Lilly chairman, president and chief executive officer. "For the last three years, he has led the strategic direction of our compounds in late-stage development and their market introduction while greatly enhancing our overall speed-to-market initiatives. In addition to new product introductions, John has directed the development of important line extensions and new uses of marketed products. Bringing innovative products to market and then realizing full demand for them form the basis of our corporate strategy. Expanding John's role to now include corporate strategic planning is a natural extension of his current role and will create valuable interfaces between our product plans and our corporate plans.
"Additionally, John will assume the critical responsibility of our business development activities," Taurel continued. "The alliances, partnerships and collaborations formed through our business development work represent key elements of our future success. These approaches also recognize that promising molecules come not only from our own laboratories but from outside sources as well."
Lechleiter joined Lilly in 1979 as a senior organic chemist in process research and development and became head of that department in 1982. Since then, he has held several management positions in pharmaceutical product development, research and development projects, and pharmaceutical regulatory affairs in England and the United States. He became vice president of regulatory affairs in 1994 and was named senior vice president of pharmaceutical products in May 1998.
Lechleiter received a bachelor of science degree summa cum laude in chemistry from Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 1975. He studied organic chemistry as a National Science Foundation Fellow at Harvard University, where he received his master's and doctoral degrees in 1980.
