BASF Shanghai Coatings: No. 1 in quality

Compliant with strict environmental standards

28-Sep-2000

BASF Shanghai coatings Co. Ltd. is the first paint supplier in China to meet the strict standards of both the American and the German automobile industry as well as the requirements of international environmental management systems. The joint venture was set up by BASF Coatings and the Chinese Shanghai Coatings Company in 1995 and has meanwhile been certified to the ISO 9001, QS 9000, VDA 6.1 and, in Addition, the ISO 14001 standards. Certification to the ISO 9002 and QS 9000 quality standards was achieved as early as 1998; the registration to VDA 6.1 followed in September 1999.

The relevant audits were conducted by DQS, the German certification agency, in accordance with internationally accepted standards, including those governing customer service level, customer satisfaction, and, since recently, environmental standards. Last week, the DQS auditor Dr. Peter Broschk handed over the certification documents in Muenster. In his address, Broschk praised above all the team that put the improvement suggestions received into action in a pragmatic way.

To Jeannie Loh, General Manager of BASF Shanghai Coatings, the recognition represents another milestone in the history of the company: "The certification proves once more that we are able to provide the same high quality in serving customers around the globe. We placed great importance on it because meeting these standards is a decisive prerequisite for cooperation with automobile manufacturers everywhere in the world."

BASF: A major international player in coatings too

BASF Coatings AG and its affiliates, along with all the coatings activities of other BASF group companies around the world, belong to the global Coatings Division of the BASF Group. With about 10,000 employees, this BASF division achieved world sales close to two billion euros in 1999, with more than 50% coming from outside Europe. The NAFTA region and South America are the other major markets. However, BASF Coatings is also active in the Asia/Pacific region, for example with affiliates in Australia, China, India, Japan, and the Philippines. In the coatings segment, BASF develops, produces and markets a high-quality range of innovative automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinishes and industrial coatings as well as the processes needed to apply them. In this business, eco-efficient powder coatings, water-based, high-solids and radiation-curable coatings play a special part. In Brazil, the company has been successful in the decorative paints market for years and is now holding the leading position.
