Aventis Announces Manufacturing Strategy in Ireland

15-Apr-2002
Nenagh, April 12, 2002: The Industrial Operations division of Aventis today announced its manufacturing strategy in Ireland. The strategy reinforces the position of its Waterford operation, which specialises in liquids, creams and ointments, and employs 160 people. In conjunction with this announcement, however, the company has decided to discontinue its solid dose manufacturing in Nenagh, County Tipperary. The plant will close by July 2002. Employees at the Nenagh facility have been notified today and further communications are ongoing. The plant employs 230 people. The decision was reached following a strategic review of global manufacturing capacity, especially for solid dose capabilities. The company has managed this excess manufacturing capacity since the Formation of Aventis in December 1999. Announcing the strategy, Sanat Chattopadhyay, head of regional manufacturing for North/South Europe Drug Product Operations, Aventis, said, "The decision impacting the manufacturing operations in Nenagh is regrettable. The performance in both of our facilities in Ireland is excellent. However, we have excess capacity in solid dose manufacturing world wide, and we must consolidate it to remain competitive. This unfortunately had a direct impact on Nenagh. Nevertheless we still have tremendous confidence in our manufacturing in Ireland. This, coupled with our strong presence in growing commercial operations division provides a firm foundation for the company in Ireland."
