Support for Science Education provided by ICI

Two new resource booklets to help teachers and pupils understand science and environmental issues have been published with the support of ICI as part of the company's commitment to improving knowledge of science matters around the world. "Helping Primary Children Understand Science and Technology" has been published to support primary teachers. It sets out to widen teachers' and children's views of science and technology using photographs of scientists and non-scientists at work, questionnaires, a picture quiz and an approach to analyse children's writings and drawings.

The booklet is based on eight years of educational research in the UK and Australia by the authors, Tina Jarvis, director of the SCIcentre at Leicester University in the UK, and Professor Léonie Rennie, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia.

"One Small Step - Understanding the Science of Environmental Issues", has been published to assist teachers and young people make informed and appropriate decisions about the future of the planet, its resources and the way we live.

The booklet is a research-based guide for primary and non-specialist secondary teacher education. It focuses on understanding in seven areas - biodiversity, the carbon cycle, global warming, ozone, energy sources, life-cycle analysis (of a manufactured product) and the concept of sustainability.

The resource, researched and written by a team from the educational department of Oxford University, was sponsored jointly by ICI and ESSO. The authors say: "Our emphasis on scientific accounts of the issues stems from our belief in the centrality of science in understanding our interaction with the environment and making rational decisions about the future."
