Dow Announces Recipients of Fabricator Excellence Awards for DERAKANE Resins in Europe

French, German & Dutch Fabricators Demonstrate Exceptional FRP Design

22-May-2002

Midland, MI - 05/21/2002 The Dow Chemical Company has announced the winners in the first annual Fabricator Excellence Awards for DERAKANE* Vinyl Ester resins in Europe. This year’s winning companies are Carlier Plastiques of Calonne Ricouart, France; Christen & Laudon of Bitburg-Staffelstein, Germany and Plasticon of Oldenzaal, The Netherlands.

The Fabricator Excellence Awards for DERAKANE Resins were created to encourage innovation and quality in the fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) industry. The awards are given to the fabricators of outstanding projects that used DERAKANE Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resins and DERAKANE MOMENTUM* Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resins during the preceding year.

Entries for the Fabricator Excellence Awards were submitted from fabricators throughout Europe and were judged based on application quality, fabricator capability and overall excellence. The following are descriptions of this year' winning projects:

Carlier Plastiques of Calonne Ricouart was recognized for the fabrication of three large scrubbers for a municipal waste incinerator in Malmo, Sweden. The scrubbers were made from DERAKANE MOMENTUM 411-350 Resin and are built to withstand exposure to multiple corrosive elements at high temperatures as well as conform to Sweden's extremely strict pollution policy. Among the largest FRP scrubbers in the world, the tallest of the three stands 31 meters tall and has sectional diameters of 6 and 4.5 meters.

Christen & Laudon of Bittburg-Staffelstein, Germany was recognized for the fabrication of a chimney liner used at a power plant in Simmering, Vienna. The liner was made with DERAKANE 470 HT Resin. The liner, which is made up of 4.5 meter tall segments, replaced a 300-millimeter thick double brick liner. The liner uses coils that are integrated into the FRP to heat the liner during plant start up, preventing rapid cool down and condensation of the flue gas. This unique design offered the perfect combination of high temperature and chemical resistance needed in this application.

Plasticon of Oldenzaal, The Netherlands was recognized for the fabrication of two 184 meter high stacks at Eggborough Power Station in The United Kingdom. The company used DERAKANE MOMENTUM 470-300 Resin in the structural laminate and DERAKANE MOMENTUM 411-350 Resin in the liner. Installing these stacks, the first FRP stacks of their kind in the U.K, proved to be much easier and less expensive than those made with alternate materials, such as lined steel and brick lining.

“These award recipients have demonstrated outstanding innovation within the FRP industry, says Mark Siebert, global business manager for composites at Dow. “Their high-quality applications remind us how FRP products made with DERAKANE Resins impact our lives on a daily basis. We introduced awards in Europe to recognize those companies who are advancing the future of the industry. As the world’s premier manufacturer of epoxy vinyl ester resins, we are pleased to honor outstanding fabricators in areas around the world.”

Recipients of this year's awards were honored at a reception dinner during the JEC Composites trade show in Paris on April 9th.

Winners receive publicity in DERAKANE News, enhanced status and name recognition in the composites industry, positioning with their end-users as providers of quality FRP equipment, as well as a commemorative award.

The Fabricator Excellence Awards for DERAKANE Resins have been selecting and rewarding outstanding fabricators within the FRP industry for 6 years in North America. Dow is currently accepting entries for the 2002 Fabricator Excellence Awards in North America. The deadline for applications is Friday, August 2nd.
