BIOTECHNICA highlights the role of biotechnological processes in industrial manufacturing
Focus on the development of biocatalysts, process optimization and the exploration of marine resources
biotechnology is playing an increasingly important role in the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly processes and new industrial products. While the impact of biotechnology is particularly evident in the chemicals sector, it also plays a major role in production processes in the food, textile and paper industries. This trend in industrial production will be a constant theme of a new special presentation and the Industrial Biotechnology Forum at this year's Biotechnica from 11 to 13 October. The program offers a useful platform for new, concrete examples of how biotechnological processes are being applied in industrial manufacturing.
Versatile applications of micro-organisms
Recent advances in the field of molecular biology have shifted the emphasis of development work and commercial exploitation to micro-organisms and their diverse metabolic products in process and production technology. In many cases, the introduction of biotech processes to manufacturing has proven more efficient than conventional chemical production.
Which processes are expected to be applied in industrial production in the future? What benefits can be derived from cooperation between bio-scientists and engineers in interdisciplinary project teams? These are some of the questions that will be considered in the forum in Hall 9 on Wednesday, 12 October 2011. The lecture program also addresses such issues as the development of biocatalysts, process development and optimization as well as the exploration of marine resources.
Forum speakers will include Dr. Ulrich Kettling from Süd-Chemie AG, Munich, who will speak on the topic of new fermentation substrates for bio-based chemicals and bio-fuels. Dr. Hubert Bernauer from ATG:biosynthetics GmbH, Freiburg, will address the need for standardization and modularisation in order to optimize metabolic engineering. Anna Klindworth from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen will speak on the use of enzymes in marine model organisms. A special address will be given by Dr. Stefanie Heiden from Allianz Industrie Forschung (AIF) based in Cologne. Several speakers will be presenting exemplary interdisciplinary projects and networks that have been supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research within the BioIndustry 2021 initiative.
The dedicated Industrial Biotechnology display and forum are being staged by Deutsche Messe, Hannover, in cooperation with BIOCOM AG, Berlin.
