Süd-Chemie and Choren Industries agree to cooperate

On Friday, 24 January 2003, Süd-Chemie AG, Munich and Choren Industries GmbH, Freiberg signed a cooperation agreement on the production of fuel from regenerative resources. The cooperation envisages Süd-Chemie developing and supplying catalysts to convert gas/order_t/'>synthesis gas into fuel or hydrogen, as well as providing the necessary process-engineering support. As the core element of the CHOREN technology, the Carbo-V® gasification process provides the basis for the leading innovative position held by Choren Industries for the manufacture of entirely pure, high-quality synthesis gas from regenerative resources, such as wood straw and energy plants. Süd-Chemie catalysts provide the technological interface for use of this synthesis gas in the production of renewable, fuels/order_t/'>synthetic fuels, such as methanol, petrol and diesel. Such fuels meet the specifications required for any application and are therefore suitable for widespread use in the automotive industry and other markets. The EU Directive KOM(2001) 547 on promotion of the use of biofuels envisages that regenerative resources should gradually replace conventional fuels to account for a 5.75 percent share of the total EU fuel market by the year 2010. This represents a market value of 15 billion euros. Choren is relying on the technical competence offered by Süd-Chemie, which is active in the field of catalyst development not only for the chemical and Petrochemical Industries, but also for producers of non-oil-based fuels using synthesis gas. With decades of experience in this sector, Süd-Chemie is the optimal partner to cooperate with Choren in developing customised solutions. Choren Industries is currently working on a research project for the manufacture renewable, synthetic fuels from biomass. Its partners in this project are the German Economics Ministry and DaimlerChrysler AG which, along with Volkswagen AG, will be taking delivery of the CHOREN fuel produced in Freiberg to test vehicle drive units. Based on optimised reduction processes which have been patented by the company, CHOREN extracts gas from biomass, i.e. wood, energy plants and recycled organic waste, for use as a high-quality source of energy. This can serve to generate electricity and heat in decentralised motor or turbine-powered plants. CHOREN will mainly be reprocessing this in centralised production plants to produce, according to given specifications, synthetic fuels which can be transported in liquid form (so-called CHOREN fuel) and can serve as a substitute for petrol and diesel.
