New Pevicoat Technical Service Center supplies Corus Yasan

30-May-2001

BASF coatings has successfully expanded its coil coatings activities in the Turkish market: A new Pevicoat Technical Service Center that was put into operation in February 2001 to formulate and manufacture coil coatings at the Gebze production site east of Istanbul now also supplies the coil coatings unit of Corus Yasan Metal A.S., Istanbul, Turkey. Corus Yasan is a 60/40 joint venture company of the Anglo-Dutch Corus group, one of the world's major steel makers, and the Turkish companies Yasan and Denka. Corus Yasan exports its products also to other east Mediterranean countries and aims to be market leader in pre-coated steel sheets and coils in Turkey. The company has an annual production capacity of about 60,000 tons of coated steel coils and needs up to 2,000 tons of coil coatings per year. Apart from Corus Yasan, BASF Coatings has won further important coil coating companies, among them CoatCoil (Gebze) and Tezcan (Izmit), as new customers. Apart from Corus Yasan, further important coil coating companies have been won as new customers, among them CoatCoil (Gebze) and Tezcan (Izmit). BASF Türk Kimya Sanayi consequently set up a facility for formulating and producing coil coatings at the Gebze manufacturing site.

The Pevicoat Technical Service Center in Gebze is the first such center in Turkey and allows BASF to offer its complete range of services - from production to logistics to technical support - to customers in Turkey as well. Finn Robberstad, responsible for the coil coatings business in the Mediterranean markets of BASF's Industrial Coatings business unit, explains the recipe for success as follows: "Thanks to flexible and compact solutions such as the Pevicoat unit our customers can produce top quality products economically." Cüneyt Icel, managing director of Corus Yasan, praises the good cooperation with BASF Coatings, saying: "Pevicoat was installed as a direct response to our just-in-time delivery requirements. As BASF Coatings is an experienced supplier of other Corus plants, partnering them in Turkey will also help us achieve our aim of supplying products to customers at the same level of quality and service as other Corus operations."

High speed and flexibility are the major benefits of BASF's Pevicoat Technical Service Center. The installation can match almost any color and gloss of coating within no more than 24 hours and mix the paint in the exact quantity needed down to 100 liters. This helps minimize stockholding and increases the coil maker's production capacity. Residual paint can be recycled without any problem, and the coil coater's response time becomes shorter. Flexible and fast production results in reduced costs. The highly sophisticated software of the Pevicoat system also ensures that paint samples are analyzed precisely and that mixing formulas are made available to production units in no time. In a new laboratory, the most modern technical equipment allows the formulas used to be checked before and during production. The time saved by fast color measurement and paint mixing is time gained for BASF Coatings' customers.
