Foundation stone laid at the new site in Hamina 06/07/01 P 194
At its new site in the port of Hamina, Finland, BASF has officially laid the foundation stone for a new plant for the production of paper coating dispersions. During the ceremony, Dr. Andreas Kreimeyer, President of BASF's Dispersions Division, underlined the significance of the site for the company's paper chemicals business: "This investment is an essential component of our integrated production concept for coating dispersions in Europe - in Ludwigshafen the new 210,000 metric ton plant for supplying the central European paper industry, Tarragona for our Spanish and South European customers, and Hamina as a local production plant for our customers in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Hamina site is thus an expression of our commitment to the important paper industry in these countries. With the new plant, we will in the main be replacing imports from central Europe with which we are at present supplying our customers in the Nordic region."
The new plant in Hamina (capital expenditure: EUR 50 million) will have a capacity of 140,000 metric tons p.a. and will go on stream in 2002. The plant will create in all about 50 new jobs. The technology for the new plant is the same as that for the coating dispersions plant which has just gone on stream at the Ludwigshafen site, where new tailormade paper coating binders have been produced since the beginning of May and which are marketed worldwide by BASF under the Basonal® trademark. The new plant in Hamina will not generate any wastewater. The Hamina site also offers opportunities for formulating further paper chemicals.
BASF is one of the leading producers of synthetic paper chemicals, and is the only company which produces and markets chemical additives both for the manufacture and finishing of paper. In 2000, BASF achieved worldwide paper chemicals sales of EUR 770 million.
