Atofina: New Chlorochemicals Plants in Qatar

02-Jul-2001

The Qatar Vinyl Company (QVC), joint venture set up in 1997 between Qatar Petroleum -QP- (25.5%), Qatar Petrochemical Company -QAPCO- (31.9%), NorskHydro (29.7%), and Atofina (12.9%) -the chemicals branch of the TotalFinaElf Group-, recently inaugurated new clorochemicals installations in Qatar, in the presence of the Emir.

ATOFINA's stake in QAPCO brings its overall shareholding in this new venture to some 16%.

Located in the industrial zone of Mesaieed (50 km South of the capital Doha), the new installations came on stream in April 2001, with the following production capacities: 290 ktpa for caustic soda, 360 ktpa for dichloroethane, and 230 ktpa for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).

The various productions are earmarked for the fast-growing markets of Asia and Australia.

ATOFINA thereby confirms its presence in Qatar, initially established over 20 years ago, together with its interest in the markets of Asia.
