Rohm and Haas Expanding Production Capacity In Thailand

21-Jun-2004
Rohm and Haas Company will increase the production capacity of its Map Ta Phut, Thailand, plant by as much as 50 percent during the next few years in order to meet customer demand. The Map Ta Phut facility, which opened in November 1996, makes acrylic emulsions used in paints and coatings, as well as adhesives. The plant was expanded in 1999 in order to add capacity for products used in water treatment and detergents, among other things. Annual manufacturing capacity today is approximately 40,000 metric tons. According to Chris Urheim, Coatings and Adhesieves Business Manager for Southeast Asia, the company has continued to see good sales growth for products made at the Map Ta Phut facility, with especially strong demand for those that serve the regional paint market. Rohm and Haas is seeing good demand for its acrylic emulsion technology throughout the Asia-Pacific region. In 2003, sales for the Coatings segment were US$211 million, an increase of nearly 20 percent. A combination of de-bottlenecking of existing manufacturing operations and modest capital investments will be used to expand capacity, primarily for acrylic emulsion based products. The increased production is expected to be on stream by mid 2007.
