Thad Evans to Succeed Joachim Szebel as Head of Merck Pigments

Merck KGaA announced that Thad Evans will join the company on October 1, 2005, and will succeed Joachim Szebel as head of the Pigments Division on January 1, 2006. Szebel, 61, has been with Merck for 33 years and will retire at the end of 2005.

Evans, 47, has held various management positions at Union Carbide Corp. and Praxair Inc. He currently is Global Managing Director Electronic Materials at Praxair and is based in Shanghai.

Evans will report to Walter Zywottek, who joins the Merck Executive Board on September 1 and will assume responsibility for the Chemicals business sector on January 1, 2006.
