Analytik Jena AG acquires 100% of APS Technologies, Inc./USA

ntegrates key-technology to analyze harmful substances in fuel

25-Sep-2001

Analytik Jena AG, developer and supplier of analytical and bioanalytical instruments as well as complete lab systems purchased APS Technologies, Inc. (Houston, Texas), effective 24th of September 2001. APS Technologies, Inc. (www.apstek.com) develops and distributes innovative analytical instrumentation for the global petroleum and petrochemical markets, concentrating on the analysis of petroleum processes and finished products. The recent changes in US government regulations have specified substantial reductions of potentially harmful substances in fuels. The determination of these substances, which include sulfur, nitrogen, and chloride, have created a need for new, innovative, and sensitive detection methods. APS Technologies, Inc. has developed a new detection method for the determination of low-levels of sulfur in fuels. This technique was approved by the US EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) as the "method of choice" in January of this year. APS Technologies, Inc. and IDC Langewiesen GmbH, a subsidiary of Analytik Jena AG, developed this technique together and submitted for a world patent for this revolutionary detection method.

Analytik Jena AG's position and the establishment in the US market will be enormously supported by mergers like this

APS Technologies, Inc. is the perfect match to the existing core competences of Analytik Jena AG and its subsidiaries in the field of "sumparameters". Sumparameters are helpful in the determination of the magnitude of possible pollutants by detecting the whole range of potentially harmful substances within different types of sample materials. As an example, the analysis of all organically bound chloride or carbon in wastewater. Analytik Jena AG is currently in a dominant position in the German and international markets with similar instrumentation for environmental analysis. The merger of Analytik Jena AG and APS Technologies, Inc. is even more important because the manufacture of the new technology can be easily integrated into the Analytik Jena AG product line and production process. Since the same basics of technology and hardware design are used in both instruments, there is a perfect integration with no logistical problems or additional manufacturing costs. Another important feature of the merger is that APS Technologies, Inc. is located in Houston, Texas, where all of the major oil-producing companies have facilities. This is especially important for the complete portfolio of Analytik Jena AG. Due to the technical specifications and their unique and distinguishing features, APS Technologies, Inc. has installed more than 50 systems in the US. Renowned companies like ExxonMobil, DuPont, Shell, Pirelli, Mitsubishi, and Samsung are using APS Technologies, Inc. sumparameters. The goal of APS Technologies, Inc. is to increase their turnover by more than 100 %, up to 1.2 million USD, for this calendar year compared to 2000. For 2002, there is at least another 50 % growth expected. Besides the existing Analytik Jena USA, Inc., located in Delaware, Ohio, and the distributing co-operation with SPECTRO, Analytik Jena AG establishes, with the acquisition of APS Technologies, Inc. (Houston, Texas), another business site in the USA.
