DANBURY, Conn., March 20, 2002 -- Praxair, Inc. announced today that the company has signed a multi-year contract for the supply of process gases to Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. (HSC). HSC is located in Hemlock, Michigan about 115 miles north of Detroit.

Under the terms of the contract, valued at more than $20 million, Praxair will provide bulk liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen to support HSC's manufacturing of polycrystalline silicon. As a result of many 300mm fabs coming on-line, the demand for polycrystalline silicon will continue to grow.

"We are very pleased to be working together with HSC to serve the semiconductor industry," stated Frank Crespo, vice president of Praxair Semiconductor Materials. "Over the past 40 years, HSC has proven their commitment to this market by continuing to be a leading supplier of high quality polycrystalline silicon to this industry."

"As we compete in an aggressive marketplace, we must capture every opportunity to reduce costs and improve quality to allow us to better serve our customers. Praxair's account team listened to our needs and worked with us to provide a cost-effective solution for supply of their high purity process gases," stated Don Pfuehler, President and CEO of HSC.
