Basell Awarded U.S. Patent for Pioneering Olefin Polymerisation Process

05-Apr-2002

Basell is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a U.S. Patent for a pioneering process for making olefin copolymers. The process, invented by Nobel Prize winner Professor Giulio Natta and his co-workers, is widely used for the production of ethylene copolymers and other polyolefin products. "We are very proud of this patent," said Enrico Zanoli, Basell's senior vice president for Intellectual Property. "It reflects the strong technological heritage of our company. With the issuance of this patent, Professor Natta's fundamental contributions to our industry are again given recognition." There was a lengthy delay in issuing patent No. 6,365,687 -- the application was filed in the mid-1950's - as a result of the comprehensive examination given to the application by the U.S. Patent Office and several judicial and administrative appeals involving competing applications filed by other companies.
