BP and NOVA Chemicals Sign License Agreements For Metallocene And Single-Site Catalysts

12-Sep-2002
4th September 2002 - London, England and Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.A. - BP and NOVA Chemicals Corporation today announced they have signed an agreement under which BP will license its Innovene Metallocene Technology portfolio to NOVA Chemicals for use in polyethylene manufacturing. In turn, NOVA Chemicals has granted BP the rights to use and sub-license its proprietary single-site catalysts. The two companies further announced that they will cooperate on development of metallocene and single-site catalyst technology for gas-phase polyethylene production. BP's Innovene Metallocene Technology delivers high-performance, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) resins for use in cast and blown film applications. These resins offer an advantageous balance of superior product characteristics and easy processability. NOVA Chemicals' complementary single-site technology is expected to enhance the scope and performance of "next generation products," an important objective of the cooperation. Together, the companies will further develop metallocene and other single-site catalysts that will be used by both companies for polyethylene manufacturing, and will also be available for license to third parties. Both companies will share in the additional revenues, which are expected to be created by this cooperation. "We are delighted that NOVA Chemicals has chosen to license our Innovene Metallocene Technology," said Peter Williams, General Manager, Licensing for BP. "Their extensive polyethylene technical expertise and catalyst technology will help speed the commercialization of Innovene metallocene products in North America and beyond." "NOVA Chemicals' and BP's catalyst research and development efforts strongly complement each other," said John Crick, General Manager of Licensing for NOVA Chemicals. "By working together, we will accelerate new technology advances that will produce polyethylene with superior performance and value." Crick also noted that this agreement builds on an already successful technology relationship. BP and NOVA Chemicals have a separate agreement to develop and commercialize NOVA Chemicals' advanced Ziegler-Natta catalyst called NOVACAT(TM)T. Innovene, BP's proprietary polyethylene and polypropylene technology, is available for license to third party producers. The polyethylene technology is currently used by 24 licensees in 16 countries who use the technology to produce more than four and one half million tonnes of polyethylene per year.
