Emerson selected by Millennium Chemicals for global agreement to improve manufacturing productivity

11-Feb-2003

Emerson Process Management, an Emerson business, has entered into a global technical and commercial alliance with Millennium Chemicals, Inc., a major producer of primary and specialty chemicals. The agreement calls for Emerson to deploy its automation technologies and services to improve manufacturing productivity at Millennium sites located across five continents. Millennium's chemicals go into thousands of products - from fragrances to coatings to carpets.

The alliance forms a preferred vendor partnership between Emerson and Millennium to develop and apply best practices for improved productivity and product quality at Millennium plants worldwide - utilizing Emerson's advanced technologies and PlantWeb digital plant architecture. The alliance also has a goal of reducing Millennium's total cost of automation system ownership by 10 percent.

Steven J. Sarnecki, Millennium Global Director of Process Control, said, "To execute our strategic plan, we needed to establish a partnership with a major supplier of process control technologies and expertise. Millennium wanted a partner oriented towards results-driven consulting and supply of complete solutions, large to small. We needed a global agreement based on strong local services to match up with our organization. This is an effort to streamline our technology transformation and improve, even accelerate, value return for Millennium's shareholders."

"In our search for the best partner, we found that Emerson had expanded its offering, while integrating operations for ease of delivering complete customer solutions," continued Sarnecki. "Emerson can address the entire plant, including equipment maintenance and process unit performance. Most important, Emerson experts have shown that they can apply the technology to deliver efficiencies and value."

Engineers from Emerson's chemical industry center have already installed and commissioned equipment, including the Emerson advanced DeltaV(TM) digital automation system, to upgrade production units at Millennium's Jacksonville, Florida, specialty chemicals plant. Additional projects utilizing Emerson's PlantWeb digital plant architecture are anticipated at the Jacksonville plant, a titanium dioxide plant in Ashtabula, Ohio, and other Millennium manufacturing sites in the U.S., U.K., France, Australia, and Brazil. Millennium plans to integrate process and equipment information generated by Emerson's process control technology into its company wide plant information system based on OSISoft's PI, giving managers front-line facts on which to base business decisions. Work also continues with the solutions and services experts of Emerson to optimize utilization of existing plant/process assets.
