Degussa sells polycarbonate sheet operations July 25, 2003 Dusseldorf, Germany, July 25, 2003. Effective July 15, 2003, Degussa AG of Dusseldorf sold the 45.5 percent stake in Makroform GmbH, Darmstadt, held by its subsidiary Röhm GmbH & Co. KG, Darmstadt, to Bayer AG, Leverkusen. Bayer had previously held a majority stake in the joint undertaking. When Makroform was founded in July 2000, the Degussa Plexiglas Business Unit contributed its polycarbonate sheet operations, which had previously been part of it, to the joint venture to concentrate on its Plexiglas® business. Silence has been agreed by the business partners regarding the financial details of the transaction. As Dr. Hans-Jürgen Kreß, head of Degussa's Plexiglas Business Unit, explains, "The divestment is a logical consequence of our consistent business alignment towards high-quality and durable methacrylate chemistry (PLEXIGLAS® ). Concentration on our PLEXIGLAS® brand enables us to strengthen our position on the transparent plastic market." Prof. Utz-Hellmuth Felcht, Management Board Chairman of Degussa AG, states: "Customers will benefit to a significant degree from this clear alignment to Plexiglas® , which can be precisely tailored to customer requirements. This is in line with our 'Solutions to Customers' concept that seeks to provide innovative, bespoke system solutions." Makroform generated a turnover of EUR100 million in fiscal 2002 with the production and sale of polycarbonate and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PET) semi-finished products. It employs 300 people altogether at its production facilities in Darmstadt and Weiterstadt in Germany, Tielt (Belgium) and Milan (Italy).
