Cognis has received the 2008 European Excellence Award in the “Evaluation” category in recognition of the way it steers and evaluates its worldwide corporate communications. This communication management ensures they make a valuable contribution to the overall success of the company. The ultimate aim of Cognis’ communication department is to support the company’s business activities and corporate strategy. Corporate Communications uses a number of tools to ensure an integrated approach to communication management, contributing to the achievement of strategic goals and financial targets. The company’s award-winning communication management has been improved continuously ever since Cognis’ foundation. The latest major enhancement was the introduction of a balanced scorecard for communications last year.
As well as setting objectives for strategic communications and measuring the extent to which these are achieved, the communication management helps to decide the priorities for planned communications activities. It also is used to ensure that messaging and tonality are consistent across all Cognis communications worldwide, and that key messages are communicated in a strategic and integrated way across all media and to all stakeholders. The communication management comprises two elements – firstly, steering tools, such as corporate communications guidelines, a communications balanced scorecard, an editorial tool and a service database; and, secondly, evaluation tools, such as media monitoring and tracking systems for internet and intranet, and an employee survey conducted every two years.
Cognis’ Vice President Corporate Communications, Susanne Marell comments: “Winning this European Excellence Award is recognition of the strategic contribution of our professional communication management to Cognis’ overall objectives. The tools ensure that activities are based on the communication strategy and the annual priorities. In this way, they support the growth and reputation of the whole company. We are very proud to receive this award, and will continue to provide communications that help our businesses to succeed in their markets.”
The European Excellence Awards were established in 2007 to honor the best communications and PR activities across Europe, and are organized by European corporate communications and PR magazine Communication Director. In 2008, over 1,100 applications were received in the Awards’ 56 different categories.
