Vacuum Generation with Water Jet Pumps Made of PP and PVC-U for Laboratory and Industrial Applications

RCT Reichelt Chemietechnik GmbH + Co.

Water jet pumps use water as a driving medium for vacuum generation and enable efficient suction processes in laboratory and industrial applications. This proven technology significantly accelerates filtration processes, as media are actively suctioned rather than flowing by gravity alone.

Operating Principle and Performance Data

The operating principle is based on the Venturi effect: A water jet creates negative pressure through its velocity, which draws in gases and liquids. The optimized flow geometry reduces water consumption to approximately 190 l/h at 3.5 bar, while the suction capacity reaches 400 l/h of air against atmospheric pressure. The achievable ultimate pressure is below 16 mbar at 12°C water temperature.

Material Variants and Properties

Water Jet Pumps Made of Polypropylene (PP):
PP pumps are particularly suitable for laboratory applications with aggressive media. The material shows excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, alcohols and hydrocarbons. The operating temperature reaches a maximum of 80°C at a nominal pressure of PN 10. Built-in check valves made of fluoroelastomer (FKM) significantly increase operational safety.

Water Jet Pumps Made of Polyvinyl Chloride-Unplasticized (PVC-U):
PVC-U versions offer highest mechanical strength and impact resistance. The material is resistant to aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones as well as inorganic acids. The pumps operate at nominal pressures up to PN 10 and show excellent UV resistance.

Application Areas

  • Accelerated filtration processes through active suction
  • Evacuation of desiccators and vacuum apparatus
  • Gentle distillation at reduced temperatures
  • Suction of vapors and gases
  • Water supply systems with oxygen enrichment

The available connection sizes from G 1/2" to G 2 3/4" cover applications from laboratory to industrial production. Water supply lines are standardly designed with R 3/4", reducible to R 1/2", with optional hose barbs for outer diameters 10-12 mm.

Water jet pumps and other products, such as diaphragm pumps, centrifugal pumps, piston pumps, peristaltic pumps, gear pumps, gas pumps as well as hand and foot pumps, are available directly in the online shop of RCT Reichelt Chemietechnik. The range of RCT Reichelt Chemietechnik offers over 80,000 different products, which are used among others in mechanical engineering, chemical technology, process engineering as well as medical technology.
