  • New X-ray procedure offers insights into iridium compounds for practical applications

Scientists at DESY and the London Centre for Nanotechnology, at University College London, have developed a new method for examining the astonishing properties of a special class of iridium oxides known as iridates. The team of principal author Pavel Alexeev, from the Dynamics Beamline P01 at DESY’s more

  • Classic double-slit experiment in a new light

An international research team led by physicists from Collaborative Research Centre 1238, 'Control and Dynamics of Quantum Materials' at the University of Cologne has implemented a new variant of the basic double-slit experiment using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the European Synchrotron E more

  • Atomistic Insights into Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysts are important for many industrial processes as they enhance the conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy and thus help to store excessive electrical energy generated by renewable energy resources. Hydrogen is expected to be crucial for the storage of chemical energy. Hyd more

Transition Metals

This graphic looks at some general properties of the transition metals – I had a little less space to work with than with the previous graphics, on account of the large number of elements that the transition metals encompass, but hopefully what’s included is still of use. more

  • Water instead of mineral oil

Optical active substances made from chiral catalysis form the basis of many drugs. Expensive precious-metal catalysts are required for the chemical production, which due to their thermal instability decompose at high temperatures and can therefore only be used once. The innovative process of DexLeChem GmbH makes it possible for the first time to use these precious-metal catalysts made from rhodium, ruthenium or iridium more than once, without modifying them. At the same time, reaction occurs in aqueous solutions instead of mineral-oil-based solvents, which increases the sustainability of the process. This is a milestone in catalysis and a real opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry. more
