Shell aims for global role in wind energy

28-Feb-2001
Wind energy is set to be a the major new offshore industry of the next generation, David Jones, the new Executive Vice President of Shell Renewables’ Wind Energy business told the Creating an All-Energy Future conference in Aberdeen today. And Shell is aiming to be an industry leader, just as it has pioneered in oil and gas exploration and production. “We believe that by deploying Shell’s world class commercial, technical and financial capabilities to large and challenging projects we are confident that we can become a major player in the global wind energy sector,” said Mr Jones. The potential for renewable energy is enormous. In time, with improvements in technology and the need for sustainable development, renewables could emulate the rise of oil 100 years ago when it overtook coal and wood as the primary fuel source. Wind energy could be at the forefront of that development. “Wind is the most competitive of the renewable energy sources when comparing costs with conventional fuels,” said Mr Jones. “Wind energy production is expected to increase rapidly and as it moves offshore to achieve wind farms of greater scale. It means the UK offshore industry based here in Aberdeen is uniquely positioned to assume a world leading role in its implementation.” Mr Jones took up his role at Shell Renewables in the New Year. Immediately before joining Shell Renewables, he was Vice President European Development at El Paso Energy International, where he was responsible for developing power opportunities. Prior to that, he held a number of different roles in the power industry at Sithe Energies, National Power, Tejo Energia, Portugal and the Central Electricity Generating Board.
