BASF Coatings de México is the new system supplier for automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG in Mexico. The agreement was made for an initial period of five years and applies to the whole car body painting process at the Volkswagen plant in Puebla. Here, a total production amounted to 287,000 cars in 2003, including Jetta A4 and New Beetle as sedan or convertible for the global market.
As a system partner, BASF Coatings de México not only supplies the automobile manufacturer with paint from BASF's location in Tultitlán. It also provides the Volkswagen plant in Puebla with all the surface coating materials needed in the production lines and is together with VW responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the paint application process.
Several factors were decisive for the selection of BASF Coatings as the system supplier. "Customer focus, intelligent solutions, a strong partnership with Volkswagen de México and our efforts to achieve mutual success with this important customer were determining factors", says Peter Fischer, Managing Director of BASF Coatings de México. "In addition to BASF's strong global presence, it was especially the quality of our products, the consistent supply and our technical expertise that convinced Volkswagen," adds Emilio Haas, BASF Account Manager for Volkswagen de México.
Since November 2003, the BASF team has been preparing everything for the start of the new system at Volkswagen's Puebla plant. In addition to the choice and integration of the sub-suppliers, the implementation of the cost-per-unit billing system in particular has been an important step on the way to system partnership: in this concept, the automobile manufacturer does not pay for the amount of paint delivered, but only for the number of painted car bodies, which meet the paint finish specifications. At the end of January, the test phase will be completed. From then on, the paint application process, material management, the operation of the paint mixing room and the warehouse logistics will be a part of the responsibilities of the 76 members of the on-site support team that includes BASF and sub-suppliers.
