Chemical distributor Brenntag opens first high-bay warehouse worldwide
Companies who want to make optimum use of storage capacities do not always need a bigger plot of land. The Duisburg location of Brenntag GmbH in Germany, for example, has decided to "reach for the sky" and is building the first Brenntag high-bay warehouse anywhere in the world to handle higher volumes of goods . With a height of over 40 meters and an internal capacity of 55,000 cubic meters, the warehouse is around the same size as 78 detached houses .
Within the space of just a few months, a new high-bay warehouse has been built on the company premises measuring 60,000 square meters in Duisburg-Hüttenheim . The inorganic solids and liquids stored at the facility are not subject to the regulations governing hazardous substances. This expansion project became necessary after a decision was made to relocate in Duisburg the flows of goods previously handled via the Dorsten location.
The facility, in which Brenntag has invested more than five million euros, will officially go into operation in January 2005.
Fully Automatic And Environment-Friendly
The goods are stored and removed by three automatic shelf loaders, and the facility also houses a picking hall with a total area of 7,800 cubic meters.
The entire high-bay warehouse meets all relevant environmental requirements . The floor consists of an 80-centimeter thick liquid-proof shell to prevent seepage of leaked chemicals. The building is also fitted with an automatic sprinkler system for added protection in the event of fire .
