Whatman plc - Appointment of Chief Executive

Whatman PLC ("Whatman" or the "Company") announced the appointment of Timothy J. Haines as Chief Executive, effective from 1 Sept 2005.

Tim, aged 47, has a broad range of international management experience in the life sciences industry. For the past five years, he has been Chief Executive of Astex Technology, a UK-based drug discovery and development company, since joining the founders in early 2000. Prior to his current role, he was Chief Executive of two divisions of NASDAQ listed Datascope Corp., a medical technology company, from 1993-2000. He was also responsible for Intervascular Inc, a wholly owned global subsidiary of Datascope, with sales of $30 million. Before joining Datascope, Tim held a number of other senior management positions. He was General Manager of Europe for US based Telectronics Inc., Chief Executive Officer at Thackray Inc., USA, a private orthopaedics company which was sold to Depuy (J&J) in 1990, and he held various senior roles at Baxter, UK. Tim has a BSc (Hons) from Exeter University and an MBA from INSEAD.

In January 2005, Tom McNally, a non-executive director of Whatman, took executive responsibility for the R&D, business development and sales functions whilst the search for a Chief Executive was underway. Mr McNally will continue in his current role as long as necessary throughout 2005 and will work alongside Tim Haines, with a particular focus on the US side of the business. In 2006 Tom McNally will return to a non-executive position.
