1 million man hours without a lost time injury

Bayer MaterialScience's Newark, Ohio, compounding facility celebrates major safety milestone

29-Feb-2008

Bayer MaterialScience LLC (BMS) President and CEO Gregory S. Babe recognized the BMS Newark compounding facility for achieving 1 million man hours without a lost time injury. The safety milestone took the 140 employees at the Newark facility more than three years to accomplish, and their streak is still going strong into 2008.

"The Newark compounding facility plays an essential role in BMS' custom polycarbonate offerings, and this major achievement really speaks to the ongoing commitment of our employees and management to quality and safety," said Babe. "The Newark employees continue to raise the bar for our company as an industry leader."

The polycarbonate materials manufactured at the Newark facility are used in numerous automotive, medical, construction, IT and domestic container applications. With customers' needs in mind, last year the facility expanded to include a Customer Design Center and a custom small-lot compounding unit. This allows BMS to respond more quickly to market needs and demands.

"This safety milestone represents the dedication and diligence that all employees at the Newark site have toward maintaining a safe work environment, and is a great credit to our team," said Lora Rand, head of production and development, Advanced Resins Division, PCS at the Newark compounding facility. "We actually passed the 1 million man hours milestone some time ago, and we're well on our way toward our second million. I challenge our employees to continue to keep safety a priority."
