Further success for eco-efficient paint technology Münster, Germany / Vienna, Austria. BASF Coatings became a systems partner for the Central Workshop of Wiener Linien, Vienna's public transport operator, last year with its Glasurit® automotive refinish paints. The workshop is responsible for maintaining and repairing the buses, trams and subway trains in the trademark red-and-white livery of the Austrian capital. It handles not only color change jobs but also refinishing work. The Central Workshop's demands regarding the paints' environmental compatibility go far beyond current legislation. Only eco-efficient water-based products may be used here - which is a perfect reason for using Glasurit paints. This is a further success for these innovative paints: 80 percent of Austrian customers are already working with BASF Coatings' eco-efficient water-based paint technology. However, it was not just the issue of environmental compatibility which tipped the scales in favor of Glasurit's 66 Line when Wiener Linien's Central Workshop took its decision after a year of testing. The use of the wet-on-wet process means that a high- energy drying process and the additional sanding of the primer coat can be dispensed with. This results in a significant time saving and thus in improved efficiency in the coating process. Unlike other refinishing systems, Glasurit water-based paints are also suitable for blend-in repairs which are carried out without the edge zones becoming visible. The use of water-based products enables a saving - compared with conventional paint systems - of about 50 percent on solvents. By using Glasurit 66 Line, Wiener Linien are already complying with the VOC regulations (which only come into force in 2002), reducing their waste paint and making a positive contribution to the health of their staff and neighbors.

Glasurit Automotive Refinish Under the Glasurit brand, BASF markets a comprehensive range of automotive refinishing paint systems, focusing on eco-efficient waterborne basecoats and high-solids paints. By using these systems all legal solvent-reduction requirements can be complied with anywhere in the world, and with regard to appearance and resistance, the products meet the same quality standards as solvent-borne paints. In this area too, the company offers a wide variety of services to support its customers. Glasurit Automotive Refinish is approved by most of the leading car manufacturers for after-market repairs and is preferred by the world's most prestigious car companies for its color expertise.
