Dow Announces Maintenance Turnaround at PO Plant in Freeport, Texas
The Dow Chemical Company will conduct a scheduled turnaround at its propylene oxide (PO) production plant in Freeport, Texas, for routine maintenance. The 2-3 week turnaround is scheduled to begin on March 27, 2008, and will involve equipment inspections and, if necessary, repairs and replacements.
"The maintenance work performed during this turnaround will enable a consistent and reliable source of PO from Dow in the long term," states John Smith, product marketing director for the Dow Propylene Oxide/Propylene Glycol (PO/PG) business. "While periodic turnarounds are anticipated in the industry, they put additional pressure on an already tight supply. Dow has been working with our PO customers to minimize the potential for disruption."
PO is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of urethane polyether polyols, glycol ethers, surfactants and other chemical intermediates, as well as propylene glycol (PG). Based on publicly available data, Dow anticipates that global demand for PO will grow at 3 to 4 percent annually through 2010, in line with the world Gross Domestic Product.
