Bayer's Dralon business sold to the Fraver group

25-Jan-2001

In line with an earlier announcement, Bayer sold the acrylic fibre (tradename: Dralon) business unit of its subsidiary Bayer Faser GmbH to the Dralon GmbH, of Neuss/Germany, a company controlled by the shareholders of the Fraver group, of Biella/Italy. Dralon GmbH acquired the acrylic fibre production facility at Bayer's Dormagen site and Bayer's remaining interest in Faserwerke Lingen, in which the Italian acrylic yarn manufacturer already owned a 30 percent stake. The newly established Dralon GmbH, into which Faserwerke Lingen was integrated as a wholly owned subsidiary, is managed by two directors, Gerd Emil Müller (CEO) and Franz J. Büter.

The manufacture of acrylic fibers is a cyclical commodity business and was not longer among the Bayer Group's core activities. The divestiture once again exemplifies Bayer's strategy of streamlining its portfolio and disposing of activities that do not have optimum development potential under the Bayer umbrella.

In its core business of acrylic yarns, the Fraver Group employs more than 3,000 people worldwide and processes over 60,000 tons of acrylic fibers each year in its 14 plants throughout Europe and the US.
