Creation of Rhodia Foundation

On the Occasion of the Official Opening of Rhodia's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Facility in Brazil

11-Jul-2007

During the inauguration of the new greenhouse gas emissions reduction facility at its Paulinia production site (Brazil), Rhodia announced the creation of the Rhodia Foundation (Instituto Rhodia), an independent organization designed to develop social and environmental projects in Brazil. Over the next six years, the foundation will benefit from an anticipated 1 million USD (EUR735,000) generated as part of the value created by the greenhouse emissions reduction project.

The foundation's first project, called 'Alquimia Jovem' (Young Alchemy), is focused on education. It involves the communities of Paulínia and the district Barão Geraldo, in Campinas, both close to Rhodia's industrial center located in that region.

The ceremony was attended by many Brazilian federal government and community representatives, the Consul Général of France, Rhodia Sustainable Development Director Jacques Kheliff, as well as customers of the Group. Philippe Rosier, President of Rhodia Energy Services handed over a first check to the foundation in the amount of EUR155,000.

Developed in the framework of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol, the greenhouse gas emissions reduction facility, which started operations at the end of 2006, is the most significant project of this kind carried out in Brazil to date. The unit reduces the N2O emissions by approximately 20 thousand tons per year, the equivalent of 6 million tons of CO2 - corresponding to the emissions of 1.2 million automobiles.

"Our greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects in Brazil and South Korea developed in the framework of the CDM, together with the first greenhouse gas emissions reduction facility started up in France (Chalampe) before the Kyoto protocol, testify to Rhodia's commitment to Sustainable Development. The creation of the Rhodia Foundation in Brazil is a natural sequel of these projects", said Rhodia Energy Services President Philippe Rosier.
