Penreco's Versagel P200 Improves Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics, Personal Care Products, Candles

10-Jun-2002
HOUSTON, June 7. 2002 -- Penreco announces the introduction and commercial availability of a new gelled petrolatum product called Versagel(TM) P200. The gelled petrolatum's versatile properties allow it to be used in a wide range of products, including the pharmaceutical, candle, personal care and cosmetics industries. Penreco will produce the gelled material using its patented gelling technology. Versagel P200 reduces syneresis or "bleeding" of liquids, which keeps the active ingredients in topical pharmaceutical products, such as ointments, balms or salves, in place for a more uniform delivery. The gelled petrolatum also has superior moisturizing qualities for use in cosmetics, such as lipstick, and in personal care products like body wash. "The gelling of petrolatum improves the overall skin feel while minimizing the effects of body heat. When combined with cosmetic and personal care products, Versagel P200 gives these products a dryer, more elegant feel to the skin," said Lin Healy, senior research associate involved in the development of the product at Penreco's new research and development laboratory located in The Woodlands, Texas. In candles, Versagel P200 modifies the melting point of paraffin waxes, reducing their brittleness while also keeping the wax from migrating away from the glass container. It also prevents fragrances from leaching out of candle wax.
