Evonik to close its orthoesters plant in Niederkassel
Evonik Industries AG will be shutting down its production plant for orthoesters in Niederkassel (Germany) in the third quarter of this year. According to the company, it has been forced to take this step due to overcapacity, the difficult competitive situation and high raw material prices. Competition, especially from China, has increased significantly in recent years and production of these synthetic building blocks, which are mainly used by the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, is no longer economically viable in Europe.
The employees affected by the plant closure will be transferred to other production facilities at the site. Evonik has around 620 employees in Niederkassel. The site's most important products are alcoholates, which are used as catalysts in the production of biodiesel.
