Wide-ranging service for synthesis of fine chemicals

New "kilo-lab" closes gap in production of small quantities

27-Feb-2002

Leverkusen - Bayer's comprehensive range of services in the field of fine chemical synthesis for the agrochemical and pharmaceutical market has been extended even further. New parallel reactor has now become available for process development to enable planned production processes to be tested quickly and reliably. A further innovation in the Leverkusen ZeTO(TM) (Central organics Pilot Plant) is a cGMP "kilo lab" for small batch sizes of between 10 and 100 kilograms, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2002. At the Informex 2002 Chemical Trade Fair in New Orleans from February 26 to March 1, Bayer will be presenting its comprehensive range of services under the motto "Committed to Customer Value".

The ZeTO(TM) Pilot Plant is able to cover the complete range, from synthesis and process development up to production - in quantities ranging from 10 kilograms to 500 metric tons. The portfolio extends from new methods, such as low temperature reactions, enzyme-catalyzed reactions and homogeneously catalyzed coupling reactions, to traditional chemical core competences such as azide chemistry, chlorination, phosgenation, oxidation and hydrogenation, and the list is being constantly extended.

As part of Bayer's new rapid process development technology, a parallel hydrogenator is available, which is capable of testing rapidly and reliably whether a desired product can also be manufactured in this way on an industrial scale. Until now, such experiments tended to be very time-consuming and thus very expensive. The eight individually temperature-controllable parallel reactors are with magnetic coupled agitators. Through an easy-to-use process control system, every single unit can be instrumented and controlled separately. Reaction volumes in the milliliter range produce reliable screening results. Through the use of this modern technology, customer inquiries for products can now be answered far more quickly, and process development can be shortened considerably.

To enable small quantities to be produced under cGMP conditions - as needed for phases 1 and 2 of clinical testing - a "kilo lab" will soon be opened in the ZeTO(TM) Pilot Plant. This facility will close the gap between the 5-liter glass flask and the 250-liter reactor.

There is a wide spectrum of customer demand for the production of fine chemicals under GMP conditions. Bayer's ZeTO(TM) Pilot Plant specializes in offering GMP solutions for the most complex "high-end" chemical challenges. Bayer is also able to offer cost-effective and efficient GMP contract manufacturing services for "mainstream chemistry" through its contract manufacturer, Novochem 2000 S.A.. This affiliated company of Derivados Quimicos S.A., is located in the Spanish town of Murcia. Flexibility and quick product change are the main strengths of the modern multi-product unit. It is designed for production capacities ranging from 100 kg - for example, for phase 3 clinical testing - to over 100 tons.
