14-Mar-2002

March 12, 2002 - Frankfurt-based Zimmer AG, a company of mg technologies ag, was awarded the contract to build a PTT plant (polytrimethylene terephthalate) for PTT Poly Canada, the largest industrial-scale PTT production facility worldwide. The contract value is in excess of Euro 40 million. The plant will be built in an industrial zone of Montreal and is scheduled for commissioning in late 2003. PTT Poly Canada is a joint venture between Shell Chemicals Canada and the Canadian regional development company SGF (Société générale de financement du Québec).

The plant will produce 95,000 tons of PTT per year from 1,3 propanediol (PDO) and terephthalic acid (PTA) on the basis of the PTT process developed jointly by Zimmer and Shell Chemicals. The PDO raw material will be supplied from Shell?s chemical complex in Geismar, Louisiana. In addition to the know-how and tech-nology, Zimmer will provide the complete engineering and supply the equipment for the polymer plant.

The product is ideally suited for applications in the textiles and carpet industries. PTT displays an excellent combination of properties of polyester and polyamides. Carpets made from PTT have inherent stain resistance along with excellent resiliency. Fabrics made from this fiber display outstanding hand, drape and elasticity.
