Abbott named on Top 10 "Best places to work for scientists" by the Scientist Magazine

16-Jun-2005

Abbott was recognized this month for its ability to nurture an environment where scientific talent can flourish by being named No. 8 to The Scientist magazine's "Top 10 Best Places to Work for Scientists" list for the second consecutive year. Abbott was the only company in the Midwest to be named to the list.

"The survey highlighted the key factors that were important to scientists, including feeling appreciated, being included in decision-making and working at a company with a research mission that is logical and clear," said Alexander Grimwade, publisher, The Scientist magazine. "Abbott's scientists rated the company highly on these characteristics."

A number of development programs have been established for Abbott's scientists to develop their skills to be successful within the company. Leadership Development for Scientists is a program specifically designed to provide enhanced skills for high-potential scientists and physicians. This program targets not only leadership, but also provides learning that is not usually included in a scientist's normal curriculum, such as business or finance.

Abbott also offers a Physician Development Program, which is designed to give physicians whom have never worked in the industry an opportunity to learn and experience many different areas of the drug development process. Upon completion of a two-year rotational program, the physician decides which area of development is best suited to his or her interests and skills.

Abbott also collaborates with top colleges and universities to develop curricula that will give scientists a business background to help them navigate working in the industry. Through these proactive collaborations, Abbott helps ensure that the candidates it considers will have the appropriate backgrounds to achieve success in their positions.
