Elemica, a neutral e-marketplace founded by some of the world's leading chemical companies to serve the global chemical industry, today named Bertrand Petit COO of its European operations, currently headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. As COO, Petit will be responsible for all operational and management activities during the Formation of Elemica's European business.

"With his broad chemical industry experience, Bertrand will play a crucial role in building and expanding Elemica's international presence," said Kent Dolby, president and CEO of Elemica. "Bertrand has established himself as a results-oriented leader who is capable of shaping our international strategy while effectively managing our European operations. We look to him to develop and strengthen our strategic relationships in Europe and to build our sales and services teams to ensure a high level of customer support."

"With 10 of Elemica's 22 investors headquartered in Europe and a significant portion of its sales expected to come from international markets, Elemica's European business will play a pivotal role in the company's success," said Petit. "Since Elemica's formation in August 2000 and its phase-one transactional launch on January 1 of this year, the company has been aggressively expanding its operations. I look forward to working with the management team to build upon the existing momentum as we progress toward full functionality."

Prior to joining Elemica, Petit most recently served as group president of the Thio and Fine Chemical division of ATOFINA (TotalFinaElf). During his 17-year career with the ELF group of companies, Petit has served in various executive and business management roles in divisions serving the chemicals, plastics, oil and gas industries. He has also been active on a variety of industry association boards, including serving as chairman of the Polyolefins Committee of the Association of Plastic Manufacturers in Europe in 1994.

Petit graduated as a chemist from the Paris School of Physics and Chemistry, and then as an economist for the Institute Français du Pétrole.
