W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) announced today the acquisition of The Separations Group, a manufacturer of chromatography columns and separation media in Hesperia, California. The Separations Group will be a unit of Grace's Davison Silica Products business. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Separations Group is a major global supplier of HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) columns and separation products for analytical, preparative and process applications to several industries, including chemical, petroleum, environmental, agricultural, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and other life sciences. Revenues in 2000 were approximately $6 million. This acquisition complements Grace's existing Silica Products business of supplying silica gel for traditional HPLC, SPE (Solid Phase Extraction), and liquid chromatography as well as new materials for biotech separations.
The Separations Group develops and markets many of its products under the VYDACÒ brand name, a product line well established among chromatographers. Grace will maintain the VYDACÒ brand name.
"The Separations Group fits perfectly into our strategy to develop our business in high growth markets that complement our existing products, technologies and competencies," said Greg Poling, Grace's Vice President and General Manager, Silica Products. "Our strategy is to combine Vydac's technology and applications position with our silica materials science and global infrastructure to accelerate our growth in the separations business."
