Eastman and Jupp Associates announce licensing program for high-pressure polyethylene technology

30-Jul-2003

Eastman Chemical Company, through its Voridian Division, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Jupp Associates Limited, Yarm, England, to sublicense Voridian developed process and mechanical know-how to operators of high-pressure polyethylene autoclave reactors.

"This agreement enhances Voridian's ability to deliver know-how to others in a cost effective manner," said Thomas A. Smith, group vice president, Voridian Division, "allowing others to benefit from a fifty-year history of continual improvement in on-stream factor, quality, and most importantly, safety."

"Over the past few years, the on-stream factors have improved significantly across all of our high-pressure operations, reflecting a continuous series of incremental improvements," said Steve DeLine, director, Polyethylene Business Unit. "The know-how being licensed encompasses those improvements that have had the largest impact on our ability to maintain stable operations."

Anthony A. Ponder, director, Global Technology Ventures, Voridian, said "Jupp Associates have extensive experience and contacts in the autoclave world and an excellent reputation for delivering practical improvements to their clientele." Initial licensing packages include stirring and reactor bearing improvements that solve two major issues with autoclave reactors: lower zone temperature stability and reactor stirrer bearing life. Ponder said, "Other know-how packages will be developed as we see the market need. These will include mechanical and process technology pertinent to both old-style and modern high-pressure autoclave plants."

Headquartered in Kingsport, Tenn., Eastman manufactures and markets plastics, chemicals and fibers. The company employs approximately 15,800 people in more than 30 countries and had 2002 sales of US$5.3 billion.
