W. C. Heraeus Expands Business Activities in Japan

10-Nov-2003

W. C. Heraeus GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of the globally active precious metals and technology group Heraeus Holding GmbH, and Liechtenstein-based Unaxis AG announced today that Heraeus K.K. in Tokyo has taken over the thin film materials businesses for magnetic data storage (MDS), large area coating (LAC) and electronic components (ELC), as well as the bond shop of Unaxis Japan Co. in Tsukuba, Japan. These business units were integrated in the Japanese subsidiary of W. C. Heraeus as part of the Thin Film Materials Division, effective November 1, 2003.

Through this acquisition W. C. Heraeus will be able to tap further growth potential in the area of thin film technology in Japan, and also to expand its product portfolio in this regional market through adding the business units large area coating, magnetic data storage and electronic components. On top of that, the bond shop, which is well-established in this market, extends the range of products and special services for Japanese customers.

In a bond shop, the materials used for thin film coating - the so-called sputtering targets - are pre-mounted for the later installation in the high-vacuum coating plants. Thus, with an integrated local bond shop, special customer demands can be met with a high level of flexibility and efficiency.

The Thin Film Materials Division of W. C. Heraeus is a leading global player in the development, production and distribution of high-quality sputtering targets and physical vapor deposition materials for the thin film coating technology, especially in the market segments magnetic data storage, large area coating and electronic components. Typical application areas are architectural glass, the production of computer hard disk drives or computer chips.
