Borden Chemical To Expand Formaldehyde Plant In Edmonton, Alberta
The new unit will add 200 million pounds of capacity to the Edmonton manufacturing site, bringing annual production capacity to 460 million pounds of 50 percent formaldehyde solution. Formaldehyde produced at the facility is used to make resins for oriented strandboard and other engineered wood products, and also is sold to various industrial users in the region. Last year the company expanded its resin production at the site, adding a 25,000-gallon reaction vessel to meet growing resin demand in western Canada.
Construction on the new formaldehyde plant is scheduled to begin in October, with anticipated completion and start-up in June 2004. The plant will utilize state-of-the-art silver catalyst technology, controls and environmental systems. Estimated cost is $10 million.
"This investment in a world-scale facility confirms Borden's commitment to supply high-quality formaldehyde and derivative products to our customers in the region," said Reggie Jenkins, global formaldehyde business director.
