ChemFirst Resumes Aniline Production at Pascagoula, Mississippi Site

ACKSON, Miss., Oct 28, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- ChemFirst Inc. (NYSE:CEM) announces that the #2 aniline plant at its Pascagoula, Mississippi facility has re-started and is currently running at its fully rated capacity of 165 million pounds annually. An explosion October 13, 2002 in the facility's nitrotoluene isomer separation unit had shut down operations at the entire plant site. The #1 aniline plant, with annual capacity of up to 100 million pounds, remains down and is scheduled to be re-started later this week following completion of inspection and safety review. The company's nitrotoluene isomer separation unit remains out of service as the incident investigation continues.

The company is pursuing recovery of costs related to the October 13 explosion under its property, business interruption and liability insurance coverage subject to policy deductibles. Wastes, liquids and debris from the explosion are being cleaned up and will either be treated on site, or will be treated and disposed of under the guidance of appropriate regulatory authorities.

In cooperation with its customers, the company is currently meeting demand for all products affected by the outage.

ChemFirst also announced that a date for its third quarter earnings release has not been established because of its pending merger with DuPont.
