Vertex Pharmaceuticals Selects Waters NuGenesis Scientific Data Management Solution

29-Apr-2004

Waters announced that Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. has selected the Waters® NuGenesis® Scientific Data Management System (SDMS) to support the company's Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) initiative. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is currently deploying discipline-specific, process-driven Electronic Lab Notebooks throughout its global research organization, with a goal of developing a scalable and universal process for increasing the efficiency of data capture and analysis in research.

"Vertex has developed proprietary Electronic Lab Notebooks for incorporation into our drug discovery research." said Steve Schmidt, Vertex Vice President of Information Systems "Laboratory data management and data archive are essential to this ELN initiative, and we believe the NuGenesis SDMS is the most attractive option to meet this critical need."

"With NuGenesis SDMS, Waters is providing a data management solution for Vertex's novel ELN that will enable streamlined data capture, cataloging, viewing and reuse functions" says Dr. Rohit Khanna, Vice President - Worldwide Marketing for the Waters Division of Waters Corporation. "Scientists and management will also have secure on-line access to project and program progress and a 21 CFR Part 11 compliant data management platform. The NuGenesis SDMS will help Vertex to effectively manage their data today and also help them transition to a more productive, fully-paperless environment."

The Vertex® ELN Initiative

Vertex seeks to discover, develop and commercialize novel, small-molecule drugs that address significant markets with major unmet medical needs. Vertex's Electronic Lab Notebooks are designed to provide easy access to source data and scientists' annotations, which can be integrated with the Company's proprietary research informatics system thus significantly reducing the time spent manually moving data from instrument reports into paper notebooks. Modules for medicinal chemistry and parallel synthesis were deployed in 2003. Vertex plans to deploy additional modules for singleton medicinal chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and formulations by the end of 2004. All of these discipline-specific ELN's will incorporate Waters NuGenesis SDMS software.
