Cognis develops solutions for polyurethane coatings manufacture

20-Mar-2002
Under its well-established Sovermol brand, Cognis' coatings & Inks business has now launched two coating polyols on the market: Sovermol 750 and 818. Compared to conventional products, they offer substantially improved performance in terms of water repellency, curing, and bubble Formation. Matching these products with specially developed additives for reaction resins, Cognis offers single-source system solutions for polyurethane coatings production. These coatings require powerful additives like deaerators, flow promoters, wetting agents and dispersants as well as rheological additives, which Cognis offers under the names Perenol E 9 and F 41, Texaphor SF 71, Rilanit HT-EZ and Rilanit Plus. Sovermol 750 is a Saponification resistant polyol for the manufacture of UV resistant polyurethane coatings for outdoor use, e.g. as topcoats. It can therefore be used in a variety of applications, such as anti-graffiti systems, solvent-free coatings, or water-based two-component thick-film polyurethane coatings. The advantages it offers over conventional polyester polyols are its very pronounced hydrophobicity and its excellent resistance to Hydrolysis and chemicals. The universal polyol Sovermol 818 is ideal for the manufacture of two-component floor coating compounds. The resulting coatings are highly resistant to acids and water, while presenting adequate resistance to alkaline media. At medium to high hardness (unfilled) they develop good mechanical properties with a relatively high elasticity (50 - 70% elongation). Sovermol 818 has good pigment wetting properties and flow characteristics. One aspect that is especially beneficial for industrial flooring is its water repellency (hydrophobicity). When combined with polymer MDI, the universal binder will cure free of bubbles in film thicknesses of up to 2 mm, even at high humidity (about 80%) and high temperatures (30°C). For these applications, powder or paste zeolites are recommended to bind the residual water in the polyol or the fillers. Unlike conventional polyether or polyester polyols, oleochemical polyols of the Sovermol type are obtained from natural vegetable oils by conversion reactions. They can be used in many polyurethane applications either as single polyols or to modify conventional polyether and polyester polyols or special polyols like polybutadiene diols and polycarbonate diols. The new deaerator Perenol E 9 was developed specifically for transparent coatings or casting resins, where it minimizes the opacity that occurs in standard products. It is also exceptionally effective in epoxy, polyurethane, unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester systems. Developed for highly filled systems whose solvent content has to be kept to a minimum, Texaphor SF 71 is a novel type of wetting and dispersing agent. Entirely free of solvents, it nevertheless succeeds in reducing viscosity to a level similar to that achieved by solvent- containing products. Perenol F 41 is a silicone- and solvent-free flow promoter which is just as effective in various resin systems as its silicone-containing counterparts. The new rheological additives Rilanit HT-EZ and Rilanit Plus The new rheological additives Rilanit HT-EZ and Rilanit Plus can be used equally well in polyurethane, epoxy resin and unsaturated polyester systems. The advantage of these two products is their high stability/order_t/'>thermal stability and the related enhancement in production safety. With Rilanit HT- EZ, Cognis has moreover succeeded in developing this property for the first time in an additive based on modified hydrogenated castor oil. Rilanit Plus also stands out for its seeding stability. The advantage of these two products is their high thermal stability and the related enhancement in production safety.
