Bayer Corporation Opens Powder Coatings Global Research and Development Competency Center

New Laboratory Continues Bayer's Commitment to Powder Coatings Technology

06-Mar-2002

PITTSBURGH, PA - March 04,2002:

Bayer Corporation has further strengthened its commitment to powder coatings technology with the opening of its $1.5 million Powder Coatings Global Research and Development Competency Center. Located on Bayer's Pittsburgh campus, the 1,600- square-foot, state-of-the-art powder coating application and testing facility will be used to support customers, evaluate new products, and develop new applications and technologies.

The Competency Center features three separate application lines that can operate simultaneously. Installed equipment includes laboratory-scale extruders, grinders, particle-size classification equipment and standard spray and oven bake capabilities. The Competency Center is complemented by additional technical expertise at Bayer facilities in Columbus, Ga., and Leverkusen, Germany.

"In March 2001, Bayer announced the formation of a U.S.-based Global Powder Coatings Intermediates and Colorants Business Group and our intent to become the most comprehensive raw materials supplier to the global powder coatings industry," said Dr. John L. Williams, Executive Vice President of Bayer Corporation and President of the Coatings and Colorants Division. "The Competency Center supports this mission and is just the latest demonstration of our commitment to powder coatings."

A Key Powder Coatings Player

Bayer became a key player in the powder coatings industry through its acquisition in the fall of 2000 of Sybron Chemicals Inc., and its RUCO Polymers Inc. subsidiary. Through the acquisition, Bayer expanded its product portfolio to include Rucote® polyester resins that can be used many diverse powder coatings formulations. By adding polyester powder, Bayer has become the largest supplier of polyester resin to the powder coatings industry in the United States and a leading worldwide supplier, as well as a full- service supplier to this market.

Bayer further strengthened its role in the industry in March 2001 through the formation of a Pittsburgh-based Global Powder Coatings Intermediates and Colorants Business Group. This commitment continues with the opening of the Competency Center.
